Dear Friend,

During the 2008 political campaign, young people showed exceptional enthusiasm for the political process. In state after state, voting records were shattered as new voters came to the polls. However, this fight for change is far from over. Now that we have turned North Carolina blue, we must work to maintain it and ensure our newly elected officials understand our needs, concerns and opinions.

The UNC- Chapel Hill Young Democrats have devoted countless hours to campaigning, raising awareness and providing community services. This year we are laying the groundwork to continue this effort. In the past year we have:

§  Registered more than 5,000 new voters.

§  Logged over 6000 volunteer hours.

§  Maintained 600 active members in the organization.

§  Hosted Chelsea Clinton, David Price, Grier Martin, and Kay Hagan.

§  Lobbied in Raleigh for the preservation of Jordan Lake, tax credits for sustainability, and various other issues.

Even outside of a national election year, we still have a lot of work to do and ambitious volunteers that want to see change become a reality. Not only are we gearing up for the 2010 Senate Race in North Carolina, but we are also working closely with local political elections including the Governor’s Race in Virginia and the Mayor’s Race in Charlotte.

Currently, we are jumpstarting a publication called the Campus BluePrint which will allow students to express Democratic ideas and how they relate to current events and topics of interest to the entire university. Furthermore, we are organizing an alternative Fall Break trip to Washington DC. This trip aims to expose the members of our organization to engagement in the political process through lobbying, meeting their elected officials and carrying out President Obama’s vision of civic duty through volunteer activities.

It is only with the help of your donations that these goals can be achieved. Although we have a track record of making the most out of every dollar, we simply do not have enough money to use our volunteers to their full potential. For this reason, your help is greatly appreciated. Here is how you can help:

§  $20 buys snacks and supplies for three shifts of students going door-to-door.

§  $50 helps us purchase the office supplies necessary to continue our voter registration drive on campus.

§  $100 buys gas to send students to canvas or on the Fall Break trip to DC.

§  $150 sponsors a student to go on the Fall Break trip. Such a generous donation will create a scholarship in your name for the trip.

§  $250 will print hundreds of copies of the Campus BluePrint to be distributed around the university.

§  $500 and more will underwrite an issue of the Campus BluePrint. This issue will be dedicated to your generosity and sent to your home.

Now is the time to make change a reality. Young people are standing up to see Democrats truly represent America. Will you stand with us? The energy is extraordinary; the turnout is record breaking, but only with your generous contributions will change become America’s reality.
