Our History
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill "Young Democrat
Club" was founded in 1939.
Over the years, the organization has become a statewide leader by hosting conventions, providing campaign trainings, and bringing in Democratic leaders like Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Lady Bird Johnson, Bill Bradley, and Barack Obama. The club served as a tough proving ground for future North Carolina leaders like former UNC YD President and NC Attorney General Roy Cooper.
YD Today
YD offers students numerous ways to become more engaged in the political process - through service work, direct advocacy, policy research, and even our own magazine.
Key YD facts and recent projects:
- With 5,000+ people signed up for our email list, and more than 700 dues-paying members, we're one of the largest student groups at UNC and are the largest College Democrats chapter in North Carolina
- In the past two years, we've hosted events on campus featuring Barack Obama, James Taylor, Kay Hagan, Chelsea Clinton, Bill Bradley, David Price, Larry Kissell, Donna Brazile, Jim Neal, Ashley Judd, and Kal Penn
- We recently collaborated with other campus organizations to
host forums on African American political power, environmental policy,
the economic crisis, and the Iraq war
- We led a UNC-wide effort that registered more than 9,000 students to vote in the 2008 elections
The easiest way to get involved in YD is to come to one of our meetings! If you have any questions about getting involved, be sure to email us - we'd love to hear from you!
